In memory of Bill & Judy Townsend

Bill and Judy

William L. “Bill” Townsend & Judith P. Townsend

Bill and Judy Townsend were married for over 51 years. While raising two children they dedicated their lives to serving others. Each passing within a week of the other, their lives were intertwined from the day they met. Together they were unstoppable making a huge impact in the community.

Bill served his country with valor during Vietnam as an infantry staff sergeant in the 25th Division. He was devoted to his family and his community. He upheld a strong family tradition of honor, legal skill, and commitment to the legal profession by winning landmark land use and civil rights cases as a private attorney. He and his family often championed causes for vulnerable people when no one else would, often at great personal and social expense. In a brief time as one of Florida’s top environmental officials under Gov. Bob Graham, Bill was named the first ever honorary citizen of Orange County for his work on behalf of clean water; he inspired others as a mentor to many young lawyers in Putnam County who went on to great success.

Bill Townsend exemplified our mission as a provider of legal services to low-income residents in the Central Florida area, specifically Putnam County. As a board member of Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida (formerly Central Florida Legal Services) for more than 20 years, Bill played a pivotal role in the history and success of our organization. He helped to guide our growth and transition, laying the foundation for our ability to serve thousands of clients each year. His dedication to community was echoed by his wife Judy who was always by his side.

Judy, like Bill, was dedicated to her family and her community. She ran the family law office and worked on behalf of many of Palatka’s caring institutions including the Bread of Life for almost 20 years. She was a beacon that inspired people to become their best selves and better angels of the community. Judy proved by example that honesty, kindness, strength, and humor could co-exist.

Together Judy and Bill were courageous, dedicated, and admirable examples of audacity, service, and love. Leaving behind a better world for their being a part of it, and an even better place because they were together.

Although their absence will be deeply felt by all, their legacy will continue to serve the people they championed throughout life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, which works to provide equal access to justice for people in the Putnam County and north central Florida area, regardless of their ability to pay.
